SB1468 has passed the Senate Education Committee! The work is not done though. It now has to pass the entire Senate and if it passes the Senate, it will head to the House. Let’s get this passed!

1. Contact all members of the Senate and ask them to support it on the floor.

2. Ask the Speaker of the House Russel Bowers to single assign the bill to the education committee in the House.

3. And contact Representative Udall, Chair of the House Education committee, and ask her to commit to hearing the bill in her committee.

Many State Representatives have stated that they don’t want to add another teacher mandate. Teachers are already mandated. They already have mandated sexual abuse training, and just as we ought to protect our children from those abuses, we should make sure our teachers have the tools to identify a mental health crisis. And the suicide prevention training is only required every 3 years and can be done online.

If you speak to teachers who have lost students to suicide they will tell you they wish they had the tools to prevent such a tragedy. They don’t want to come to class and see an empty chair. Let’s be proactive and ensure no teacher has an empty seat in their classroom due to suicide.
